The UAE ranked first in the Middle East and 46th in the world on the Bloomberg Innovation Index for 2019, which analyzes many standards for measuring innovation across countries, including research and development spending, manufacturing capacity, and the concentration of technology companies in the public sector.
South Korea topped the global ranking this year, followed by Germany in the second place after the improvements in the research and education sectors in Europe's largest economy. The United States rose to eighth place, after being eliminated from the Top 10 for the first time because of its declining performance in education. Sweden, which ranked second in 2018, fell to seventh place this year, while the acceleration of patent activities in China led to its rise to the 16th place. The United Kingdom dropped to the 18th place, followed by Australia in the 19th place. Among the newcomers to the list, some of the largest emerging economies: India (54), Saudi Arabia (56), Mexico (59), and Vietnam (60).
